Guerrilla Girls Nordic Tour

Guerrilla Girls Nordic Tour
April 20–27, 2011

Göteborgs Konsthall, Sweden/ Werstas & University of Helsinki, Finland

During the Nordic Tour 2011 Guerrilla Girls founding members Frida Kahlo and Käthe Kollwitz will be performing and conducting workshops in Gothenburg, Sweden, Tampere and Helsinki, Finland with the aim to create debate about equality, discrimination related to gender, sexual orientation, race or ethnic background in the Nordic art scene.

Wearing gorilla masks and using the names of dead women artists, the Guerrilla Girls are known for their provocative statements, irrefutable information and outrageous visuals. Humorous yet factual campaigns have raised issues of discrimination and gender equality in the fields of art, film and politics worldwide. The themes highlighted by the group are as topical in the Nordic countries today as they were in the United States 25 years ago.

A public performance presented by Göteborgs Konsthall April 20th 6–8 pm and a workshop for artists and cultural producers at Galleri Box April 21st takes place during their stop in Gothenburg, Sweden. It also includes a student only classroom visit at the Valand School of Fine Art, University of Gothenburg, April 20th.

In Finland the group will perform at The Finnish Labour Museum Werstas, Tampere on April 26th from 6–8pm hosted by Tampere Art Museum & TR1 Kunsthalle. A workshop for students at the Tampere University of Applied Sciences & Visual Arts on the 27th and a performance at 4.30–6.30pm at the University of Helsinki (Metsätalo), hosted by Gender Studies at the University of Helsinki.

Guerrilla Girls Nordic Tour is produced by Josefina Posch, Snowball Cultural Productions (Sweden) and Kira Sjöberg, ArtShortCut (Finland) in collaboration with Göteborgs Konsthall, Valand School of Fine Art, University of Gothenburg, Galleri Box, Just a Studio, FRAME Finnish Fund for Art Exchange, Tampere Art Museum & TR1 Kunsthalle, University of Helsinki - Gender Studies, Gallery Kalhama & Piippo Contemporary, with support by Konstnärsnämnden/IASPIS, Göteborgs Stads kulturnämnd and Västra Götalandsregionens kulturnämnd.
